We meet every Tuesday starting at 4:30pm. Meetings typically last 45 minutes, unless it is a competition day. Advanced meetings are in Mr.Patterson's(C-122) room. Beginner meetings are in Mr.Jarrell's(C-106) room. Informational meetings take place only in Mr.Patterson's(C-122) room.
Our club mainly focuses on the Java programming language, and solving problems with it. We typically teach new and exiciting topics each clu meeting, and have a comptition every now and then. We have a few competitions spread throughout the year that we partake in. Our main competition, UIL, starts in about March.
UIL is a large multi-event competition across Texas. We are in the 5A(large public school) division of UIL and our club takes part in the Computer Science event. The event is split into 2 portions, the written test, and the hands-on contest. The written test is a test on paper, where you are asked 40 multiple choice questions about the syntax of Java. The hands-on contest is a 2 hour programing competition where our team is allowed one computer to solve 12 programming problems.
We are allowed to send one team of 4 students to UIL. All 4 students compete in the written test, and the top 3 scores are chosen to determine our team score for the written portion. The top 3 students compete in the hands-on portion, where we have 12 questions to solve. The scores from the written and hands-on combined create our team score.
On the written Exam you have 45 minutes to compelete 40 questions. Each correct question awards 6 points, while each incorrect question reduces your score by 2 points. Skipped questions do not affect your score. For the hands-on portion, each solved questions is worth 60 points, while each incorrect submission loses you 5 points.
